Brennholz im Einklang mit der Natur anbauen

Dieses Jahr im Frühjahr / kommenden Herbst startet Ben auf unserem kleinen Hof ein neues spannendes Projekt:
unser eigenes Brennholz mit Weiden zu produzieren.

Ein lebendiges, schnell wachsendes und regeneratives System, das einfache Stecklinge in langfristige Energie, Lebensraum und Schönheit verwandelt.

Statt Ökosysteme zu belasten, kann Weiden-Kopfbewirtschaftung mit der Natur arbeiten:

  • schnelles Nachwachsen nach der Ernte
  • Nistplätze & Schutz für Wildtiere
  • Wurzeln schützen und verbessern den Boden
  • natürlicher Windschutz entlang der Zäune
  • jährliche Biomasse für Mulch, Wege, Garten und Brennholz
  • Heizen und Feuer machen mit unserem eigenen Holz

Wir ernten nicht alles auf einmal. Wir arbeiten in Rotation, lassen der Natur Pausen und bauen Schritt für Schritt ein System auf, das jedes Jahr stärker wird.

Das Projekt

Wir bepflanzen entlang von 140 Metern Zaunlinie am Zwergalhof Weiden und dokumentieren den gesamten Prozess:

Pflanzen • Wachstum • Wildtiere • erste Ernte • Trocknung • und später das Heizen und Feuermachen mit unserem eigenen Holz

Pflanzkonzept

Wir verwenden ein doppelt versetztes Pflanzsystem mit 45 cm Abstand.

  • genug Dichte für hohe Biomasseproduktion
  • genug Luft und Platz für gesunde Triebe
  • stabile langfristige Entwicklung
  • leichtere Pflege und Ernte
  • starker Windschutz + Lebensraum für Tiere

Benötigte Stecklinge

140 m ÷ 0,45 m ≈ 311 Pflanzen pro Reihe
Doppelt versetzt → ~620 Stecklinge gesamt

Ausgewählte österreichische Weidensorten (20 cm Stecklinge)

  • Salix viminalis – schnell wachsende Energieweide (Biomasse-Sorte)
  • Sven – robuste Strauchweide mit guter Ertragsstabilität
  • Inger / Linea – leistungsstarke Energieweiden
  • Tordis – widerstandsfähige und anpassungsfähige Sorte

Seed-Money Ziel: € 300

Growing firewood in harmony with nature

This year in spring / coming autumn, Ben is starting a new exciting project on our little farm:
growing our own firewood with willow.

A living, fast-growing and regenerative system that turns simple cuttings into long-term energy, habitat, and beauty.

Instead of harming ecosystems, willow coppice can work with nature:

  • fast regrowth after harvest
  • nesting places & shelter for wildlife
  • roots protecting and building soil life
  • natural windbreak along fences
  • yearly biomass for mulch, paths, garden use & firewood
  • heating and bonfires made from our own trees

We won’t harvest everything at once. We’ll rotate sections, let nature rest, and slowly build a system that becomes stronger every year.

The plan

We are planting willow along 140 meters of fence line at Zwergalhof and documenting the full journey:

planting • growth • wildlife visitors • first harvest • drying • and heating the house and making bonfires with our own grown wood

Planting design

We chose a double staggered planting system with 45 cm spacing.

  • dense enough for strong biomass production
  • open enough for healthy stems and airflow
  • stable long-term growth
  • easier maintenance and harvest access
  • strong windbreak + wildlife corridor effect

140 m ÷ 0.45 m ≈ 311 plants per row
Double staggered system → ~620 cuttings total

Selected Austrian willow varieties (20 cm cuttings)

  • Salix viminalis – fast-growing energy willow (biomass core species)
  • Sven – strong shrub willow for yield stability
  • Inger / Linea – high-performance energy willow
  • Tordis – resilient and adaptable variety
